The Drill vs No-Drill Guide

The Drill vs No-Drill Guide

Drilling is intimidating.

Taking a drill bit to the roof of your rig is a bit of mental hurdle. We get it.

Here at Sherpa we use factory mounting points whenever possible, and we only require drilling when it is absolutely necessary for strength.

For the vast majority of our racks, we are able to utilize the existing threaded holes or tracks that came on your vehicle from the factory. That means no drilling!

However, some vehicles simply don't have factory roof mounts. Since our racks are built to carry heavy loads over tough terrain, drilling may be required to meet our strength standards.

Find your vehicle below to see exactly what your installation will look like.

NO Drilling Required

The vehicles on this list have factory mounting points where you will simply bolt your Sherpa rack directly into the existing holes.

May Require Drilling

The fiberglass hardtops on Jeeps present a unique challenge. We offer a 100% no-drill rack that mounts to the rain gutters. However, if you need maximum payload capacity for rooftop tents, heavy accessories, etc., we recommend our Heavy-Duty rack, which does require drilling through the hardtop to tie directly into the roll cage.

Drilling Required

The manufacturer didn’t give us mounting points on these vehicles, so we have to make our own. We require drilling here because it is the only way to guarantee your rack won't rip off on a washboard dirt road. Don't worry—we provide the exact hardware, instructions, and weather-seals you need to do it perfectly.
